A quasi three-dimensional numerical model was developed for the analysis of heat transfer and solidification pattern in the continuous casting process of Al alloy rod. The quality of Al allay rods produced by continuous casting was critically controlled by the temperature distribution in the metal in the whole casting process, The calculated temperature distribution and solidified shell thickness profiles have shown solidification characteristics of this process in each cooling region, and with these results, the procedure of surface crack formation in the edge region of east bar was analysed. The effects of alloys and casting variables, such as casting temperature and speed, on the length of solidification end and the center crack were predicted, and optimized casting conditions were proposed to improve the casting quality and productivity. |
