Pyrometallurgy / Effects of Melt Convection and Nucleation of Oxide Inclusion on Deoxidation Process during Clean Stainless Steel Making

Abstract
Deoxidation behaviors in the Al killed sus 304 melt were studied. The actual limit would be rationalized with the aid of nucleation of the oxides in the melt. Decreasing solid/liquid interfacial energy by creating potent nucleation sites was proved experimentally good to reduce the deoxidation limit. Melt convection and slag properties which affected the oxide behaviors were also studied. Melt convection which is known to make the oxides stay in the melt, helps them be removed to the slag, if it can be strong enough to create a new melt/slag interface, until so strong to break the top surface of the slag. Various slag types of different basicity and viscosity were also used to understand the oxide/slag interaction. The result showed that the physical properties of the slag should be considered together with the strength of the melt convection. The amount of the melt/slag interface energy should also be counted as one of the major properties of the oxide absorptiveness of the stags.
