Abstract
Shape memory effect was observed in an austenitic stainless steel(AISI 304 type), after bending at-196℃ and heating to 340℃. Shape recovery angle was increased with increasing initial bending angle, showing a peak at around 130°, and then decreased with further bending angle. However, the shape recovery ratio was smoothly decreased with increasing the initial bending angle. The shape memory effect of this alloy was due to transformation of austenite to epsiron martensite during deformation and reverse-transformation of the martensite to the austenite on heating above A_f temperature.
